The deflections of the vertical at a number of Laplace stations can be used for a second type of datum orientation known as the astro-geodetic orientation. A Laplace station is defined as a triangulation or traverse station at which a geodetic (Laplace) azimuth is derived from an astronomic azimuth by use of the Laplace equation.
